Dental Exams & Cleanings
What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?
A dental examination is a necessary part of caring for your teeth. We look for cavities, problematic restorations and even oral cancer during your bi-annual checkup. Cleanings are performed by licensed dental hygienists who clear away tartar, stains and plaque from the teeth. Your teeth are checked for signs of gingivitis and gum disease so that treatment is provided to you in an effective manner.
Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?
Preventing problems from happening in the first place is key to keeping your smile looking its best. The best way to prevent dental-related problems is with regular examinations and cleanings done in our office. Cleanings alone can help to prevent tooth decay as well as gum disease. The hygienist removes a hard, chalky substance from your teeth, known as tartar. Tartar buildup can cause both gum disease as well as tooth decay if left in place.
Who is a candidate for Dental Exams & Cleanings?
Everyone is a good candidate for a dental examination and a cleaning. In fact, it’s recommended that every member of your family come in for an exam and cleaning at least twice a year. These bi-annual checkup visits allow us to monitor for changes and keep your teeth clean and healthy. If there is a problem, we can provide treatment quickly so that the issue does not get worse.
What happens during the appointment for Dental Exams & Cleanings?
The appointment begins with a cleaning performed by a registered dental hygienist. The hygienist uses tools, known as scalers, to clear away tartar buildup and stains. An ultrasonic scaler may be used for areas that have heavy buildup or staining. The teeth are flossed thoroughly and then polished. The hygienist then checks your gums for signs of gum disease by measuring the pocketing around each tooth. The doctor then comes in and performs a complete dental exam and makes notes of any treatment that is needed.
